Welcome to the Corning Union Elementary School District
A Message from Stephen Kelish, Superintendent

Corning is located on the busy I-5 corridor that runs the full length of the western states.  It is a bustling farming community and is touted as the “Olive Capital of the World.”  Walnuts, almonds and rice are also commodities that are grown in the Corning area.  The boundary of the District is located in the southern territory of Tehama County and includes the City of Corning, and adjacent unincorporated areas.  The City is situated about 115 miles north of Sacramento in California’s central valley and about 20 miles south of Red Bluff, the County seat. Population for the City of Corning as of 2002 was 6,775 with Corning Union Elementary School District ranking third in the number of major employers for the Corning area.

Corning Union Elementary School District encompasses a large geographical area of southern Tehama County, which borders the Glenn and Tehama County line.  Corning Union Elementary has six schools. Our oldest is West Street Elementary (K-5) with 160 students, Olive View Elementary (K-5) with 640 students, Woodson Elementary (K-5) with 420 students, Rancho Tehama Elementary (K-5) with 85 students and Maywood Middle School (6-8) with 660 students.  The District also operates the Corning Area Community Day School (15 students).

Each of our campuses have been modernized, while Woodson Elementary is new, having been built in 2003.  The District strives to maintain safe and clean campuses that are fenced and secure.  The community has access after hours to our playgrounds and facilities.  We provide transportation within our boundaries and have a partnership with the Corning Union High School District to share transportation services.

Enrollment at Corning Union Elementary School District is currently 1,980 students (2005-2006).  The student population consists of 48% Caucasian with 49% Hispanic, with the remaining 3% divided among Asian, African American, American Indian or no response.  75% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunches.  Corning Union Elementary School District employs 104 fully credentialed teachers.

All teachers in the Corning School District are working with proper CTC certification qualifications and 98% of our teachers have been certified as NCLB “Highly Qualified.”  The final 2 % are completing the necessary additional coursework to become highly qualified.  Twelve staff members have earned their Master’s Degrees.  We currently employ Paraprofessionals who work with students daily.  The Paraprofessionals are well trained and monitored by the credentialed teaching staff.  All 100% of our Paraprofessionals are now certified as NCLB “Highly Qualified.”  More District demographics are available on the District School Accountability Report Cards.

We are pleased to be able to offer counseling services, special education, speech pathology, a district nurse, intramural programs, athletics at the middle school, music for all grades, GATE and After School tutoring programs.  These programs have proved to support our students in their academic, social, mental and physical development.  The needs of special education students are being met through both Special Day Class and Resource Specialist programs.  The special day and resource students are progressing toward their goals as set at annual IEP meetings, where assessment and standards alignment are discussed with parents.  Some specialized special education services are provided through the Tehama County Department of Education.

The Districts Middle School, Maywood, is currently involved with the EAST Program, partially funded by an EETT Grant (technology grant).  Students recently implemented a community based learning project, whereby community members were invited to come and learn how to operate a computer.  Response was overwhelming and students are planning to expand the program.  Students in this program are required to maintain a high grade point average in order to participate.

The Corning Union Elementary School District has made student achievement its highest priority.  The Board has adopted Core Values that set priorities for spending and policies that ultimately affect all decisions within the District.  Each school has a comprehensive staff development program to train administrators, teachers and support staff regarding best practices in curriculum and instruction.  The District is working very hard to improve test scores in all areas and for all subgroups.

Corning students feed into the Corning High School, which also serves several out-lying small school districts as well.  The High School and Corning Elementary work together to align their curriculum and meet state standards to ensure a smooth transition into High School.
